What is Discaroo?

Discaroo is a place to trade disc golf discs & gear you don't want.

The idea is simple: If you've played much disc golf then you definitely have discs & gear you don't use for one reason or another. What do you do with these extra discs/gear? Before now, if you're like most disc golfers, the answer is not much.

How Can I Trade My Discs & Gear?

  1. Create a Free myDiscaroo Account
  2. List your items and what you want to trade them for.
  3. Find something you want and request a trade by offering 1 or more of your items. Once the trade has been approved...
  4. Mail the item

How Much Does It Cost?

Discaroo does not charge to use its services. The only cost to turn your unwanted disc golf discs & gear into something you want is the cost of shipping.

How Do I Ship Disc(s)?

Throw the disc into an envelope, address it and put 5 regular stamps on (6 for putters or discs over 170 grams). No need to go to the post office*, just cram it into your mail box and let the mailman do the work. You may also want to write "Do Not Bend" on the envelope.

Disc Shipping Example

*For military AFO, APO and FPO addresses you need to mail the disc from the post office. Small price to pay for freedom so DO IT!

What's Automatch and How Does it Work?

Automatch will show you all the possible trades available for a particular item you own and have listed on Discaroo. A whole lot easier than browsing the discs & gear trying to find good matches yourself.

Automatch can be accessed from your myDiscaroo home page.

Why am I Not Receiving Discaroo Emails?

The first thing to check is that your email address listed under your profile (myDiscaroo > Edit Profile) is valid. Next, check your Junk Box to make sure they aren't getting redirected there. We have had a few instance of Discaroo emails being blocked by smaller mail services. Try using a different account if you think this may be the case.

What if Someone Doesn't Reply to My Trade Request?

You may cancel a trade request at any time by clicking on the red "Cancel Trade Request" button under the Active Trades heading on your myDiscaroo page.

What's a Wanted Item?

A Wanted Item is our term for, wait for it...something you want. More specifically, it's a disc or piece of gear you are willing to trade one of your discs/gear for.

Wanted items are meant to be "tied" together with the items you are trying to trade. For example, let's say you have an Innova Champion Orc that you want to trade for an Innova Starfire or any Discraft Putter. First, create the listing for your Orc and then add the two Wanted items and be sure to "tie" them to your Orc by checking the checkboxes available when you click the "Edit Wanted Items" link under any of your items.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the more generic the Wanted Item is the more likely you will be to find a trade that matches its criteria. So, for example, if you're willing to trade your disc for any disc that is a driver then you would only fill out that form field on the Wanted Item form.

Wow, that sounds more complicated than it actually is. If you are still confused drop us an email (contact@discaroo.com) and we can help you out.

What's a Generic Item?

A generic disc is a Wanted Item that you create by leaving all of the fields in the Add Wanted Item form set to optional. When you tie this item to one of your own you are effectively saying, "I will entertain all offers for this item."

How Can I Avoid Getting Ripped Off?

Follow these suggestions and you'll stay happy!

  1. Feedback: Do they have positive feedback from different users over an acceptable amount of time? We recommend that if you have good feedback and are trading with someone with zero to negative feedback that you make the trade with the understanding that you will not be shipping your item until you receive theirs.
  2. Photos: If you have doubts that a trader has the item they are offering to trade simply request that they email or upload a photo that includes their Discaroo user name written down and legible in the photo.
  3. Activity and Longevity: Check how long the user has been a member and whether they are active on the site. This information is available on any individual disc detail page next to the owner's username.
  4. Too good to be true syndrome: If a trade sounds to good to be true it probably is (i.e. your beat up old DX Beast for their New First-Run Destroyer).

How Do I Leave Feedback?

Once you have completed a transaction (a trade, sale or purchase) you will find an icon Comment Icon next to the transaction in your Transaction History on your myDiscaroo home page. This icon will disappear once you've left the feedback.

How Does Feedback Work?

After each trade you will have the option on your myDiscaroo home page under Transaction History to leave either positive, neutral, or negative feedback for the person you traded with.

Be considerate in the feedback you leave as it effects other users ability to trade on the site. Always try to resolve issues through direct email contact before leaving neutral or negative feedback. Give the person a chance to make it right.

Any user with more than 10% negative feedback will have their account locked until the improve their feedback by resolving disputes with other users.

You can edit feedback that you've left for other users by clicking the "Edit Feedback" link in the myDiscaroo flyout menu.

How Does Discaroo Handle Scammers?

We have developed DisCop which is a piece of software running on the website which searches for any users with more than 10% negative feedback. When found these user accounts are locked so that the person can't add new discs or trade with anyone until they've resolved their disputes.

What if Someone Screws Me Over?

It is possible that someone could rip you off. Just remember it's only $2.05-2.46 (the cost of the stamps) and a disc you didn't use anyhow. If you are really concerned be sure to only trade with other players who have strong feedback and good comments.

Someone Ripped Me Off, Can I Get a Refund/Help?

We are unable to offer dispute resolution services at this time. We have implemented numerous layers of protection throughout the site including tips within these FAQs for safe trading.

My account has been frozen. How can I fix this?

The only way to get your account reinstated is to get your negative feedback under 10% of your total feedback. To do this you will need to contact the users who have given you negative feedback and make things right. They can then change the feedback they left for you once your dispute is resolved.

How can People Pay Me Through Paypal?

When you sell a disc you can specify whether you accept Paypal or not. To enable this feature be sure to put your PayPal email address in your profile. Go to myDiscaroo > Edit Profile to do this.

What are Discaroo Dollars and How Can I Get Some?

A Discaroo Dollar (DDs) is quasi-cash (also known as funny money) created as a means to allow ANY person to get ANY item on Discaroo.

Currently, there's only one way you can get DDs and that is to sell your discs & gear.

Can I Cash Out Discaroo Dollars for Real Money?

Not at this time. If you need cash, sell via PayPal or use your Discaroo Dollars to buy discs.

How Can I Buy and Sell Discs & Gear?

Buying and selling is accomplished using the quasi-cash of Discaroo Dollars (DDs) or via PayPal. You will have the option to set a price when adding a new item. You can also choose from 3 transaction types: Trade Only, Sell Only and Trade or Sell.

To buy an item you just find the item you want and click the "Buy Now" button on it's detail page. Discs & Gear that are for sale have the price prominently displayed on the page. If you don't see the price and "Buy Now" button then the item is not for sale.

In order to buy an item with Discaroo Dollars you must have enough Discaroo Dollars in your account. You can add DDs to your account by selling your own discs & gear.

Who Pays for Shipping and Handling on Purchases?

Does Discaroo Guarantee the Value of the Discaroo Dollar?

We don't guarantee the value per se, but we do work hard to keep the Discaroo economy a healthy one. The main way we keep things in balance (supply and demand) is by selling new discs and gear on the site. We buy these discs with the money generated from the sale of new Discaroo Dollars. We then sell them on the site which removes Discaroo Dollars from circulation. We are always watching the number of discs available for sale compared with the amount of Discaroo Dollars in the economy as a whole.

Why do I keep getting an "Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80040e14' Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression" error when searching for discs?

We aren't totally sure about the "why" but an easy short term solution is to clear your browser cookies. If you don't know how to do this simply Google "how to clear browser cookies in your browser" where "your browser" equals the name of the web browser you are using (i.e. "how to clear browser cookies in firefox").

Who's Responsible for This?

Discaroo was created by Steve Schlange in the fall of 2007 when he realized that he had a lot of discs in his bag that weren't being used. Steve works full-time in the web site development field but would prefer to be working full-time on his disc golf game. He lives, works and plays in Spokane, Washington.

Who Took the Photo Used on the Site?

Pictured is Todd Kurnat, an avid disc golfer from San Francisco. The course is on the campus of Western State College of Colorado - Mountaineer Disc Golf Course (pretty rough, poorly marked, dry and scrubby, but very fun). Photo by Ethan Beute..
